Making your bed like a hotel: the method

Hospital corners, a taut fitted sheet, a turn-down, a fluffed-up duvet and upright pillows: the five-step method for making your bed like a hotel — and keeping it neat all week.

You walk into a hotel room, you see the bed, and something relaxes. It is not the price of the night: it is a fitted sheet without a crease, a flat sheet pulled perfectly straight and pillows that stand upright. None of this requires special equipment. It takes a method, five minutes, and two or three choices of linen that make the difference.

What really makes the difference in a good hotel

Before technique, materials. Three things explain most of the result.

First, the weave. Hotels use long-staple cottons, tightly woven. A 400 thread count Egyptian cotton fitted sheet falls straight, has that smooth, almost satiny feel and does not form the small puckers you see on loose fabrics. It softens with every wash instead of wearing out.

Then, white. It is not there to look chic but because it can be washed hot, replaced piece by piece, and because a plain bed looks neat even when it is badly made.

Finally, the pillow. A soft pillow sags as soon as you put it down. A goose feather and down pillow, shaken and stood upright, keeps its shape all day. That is what gives the vertical line at the head of the bed.

Our hotel-style bed linen selection brings these three choices together in one place.

Step 1: the layer you do not see

A hotel bed starts with a mattress protector. You cannot see it, but it creates the surface: it smooths out irregularities in the mattress and stops the fitted sheet from catching on the ticking. It also protects the mattress from the moisture of every night, a subject in its own right.

Put it on before anything else, well centred, and check that it does not ripple in the middle. A bump here will show through two layers.

Step 2: the taut fitted sheet, hospital corners included

This is the step where everything happens. A badly stretched fitted sheet cancels out the rest.

  1. Fit the two corners at the head first, then the two at the foot, pulling diagonally.
  2. Run your hand all the way round so that the elastic goes well under the mattress, not just over the edge.
  3. Smooth from the centre outwards, never the other way: creases are chased out, not pushed.

If the sheet comes off during the night, it is almost always a matter of a pocket too shallow for the mattress depth, not fabric quality. Measure the height of your mattress before ordering.

Our Egyptian cotton fitted sheets range from 140x190 to 180x200, with elastic all the way round.

Step 3: the flat sheet and the turn-down

The flat sheet is what most clearly distinguishes a hotel bed from a bed at home. Lay it face down, wide hem towards the bottom, and centre it. Tuck it in at the foot and sides, forming a hospital corner:

  1. Fold the overhanging fabric up onto the mattress, forming a triangle on the side.
  2. Tuck the part that is still hanging under the mattress.
  3. Fold the triangle back down, then tuck it in too. The corner is neat, and it holds.

At the head of the bed, leave thirty centimetres of flat sheet overhanging, lay the duvet on top, then fold the sheet back over the duvet in an even band. This is the turn-down. It frames the bed, and it has a real use: it protects the duvet cover, which then needs washing less often.

Step 4: the fluffed-up duvet

A flattened duvet makes a sad bed. Take it by two corners, shake it two or three times vertically to redistribute the filling, then let it fall flat. Run your hand into the corners of the cover to bring the filling back there: that is where it is always missing.

Volume comes from the filling, not from ironing. The Hôtel 4 Seasons duvet relies on this: a lofty microfibre filling under a 100% cotton shell, which regains its shape with a shake and keeps you warm without overheating. Its contrasting piping runs all the way round the duvet and stops the edges from fraying over the washes.

Step 5: upright pillows

Pat the pillow on all four sides to bring the filling back to the centre, then stand it up against the headboard. Two upright pillows are enough: beyond that, you are no longer in a hotel, you are in a shop window.

A dip in the centre of the pillowcase means the pillow has had its day: the density of the filling matters more than the cover. For the finish, an Egyptian cotton sateen pillowcase matching the fitted sheet is enough to keep the line, in 50x70 or 65x65.

Keeping this look all week

Three habits are enough. Re-stretch the fitted sheet every morning, in ten seconds. Shake the duvet instead of smoothing it by hand. And take the linen out of the machine as soon as the cycle ends to hang it out well stretched: Egyptian cotton dries almost crease-free if you do not leave it in a ball.

The rest comes down to the atmosphere of the room — temperature, light, tidiness. We have gathered all of this in the guide to creating a bedroom where you truly sleep well.

To start with the basics, a taut fitted sheet and a duvet that keeps its shape already achieve most of the result. Everything is gathered in the hotel-style bed linen selection.
